Headaches and pineal cysts.

چکیده
CASE This is a 27-year-old man with migraines without aura for about 15 years that have increased in frequency to about twice a week in the last 1 year. The headaches are relieved within 1 hour by a triptan. Neurological examination was normal. Family history reveals that both parents, his brother, and sister are all migraineurs.A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain obtained at the patient’s request revealed a 6-7 mm pineal cyst without mass effect. Questions: What is the natural history of pineal cysts? When are follow-up MRI scans indicated? Are pineal cysts associated with migraines?

Asymptomatic and symptomatic glial cysts of the pineal gland.
Glial cysts of the pineal gland are benign and mostly asymptomatic incidental lesions found in the brain MRI or at autopsy examinations. In rare cases pineal cysts become symptomatic and require surgical intervention. Symptomatic glial cysts may be clinically and radiologically indistinguishable from cystic neoplasms of the pineal region; therefore, histopathological diagnosis is critical for f...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although the prevalence of pineal cysts in autopsy series has been reported as being between 25% and 40%, MR studies have documented their frequency to range between 1.5% and 10.8%. The purpose of this high-resolution brain MR imaging study at 1.9T was to determine the prevalence of pineal cysts in healthy adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS Brain MR images of 100 healthy you...

A large number of individuals suffer from migraine headaches. Several theories attempt to explain migraine etiology. One such theory holds that since environmental stimuli are well known to trigger migraine headaches, the pineal gland may be involved in migraine etiology. Specifically, a pineal gland irregularity may be the physical origin of migraine headaches, with subsequent physiological ch...

In the last 20 years neurological and neurosurgical follow up of our patients with pineal region expansions (118 patients) pointed to certain clinical and neurophysiological regularities. We performed retrospective study which included 84 patients with pineal region expansions in the period from 1992 to 2009. The study included 55 women and 29 men, mean age 30.08 +/- 13.93 years, with positive ...
متن کاملThe prevalence of pineal cyst in patients with cerebral palsy.
PURPOSE Pineal cysts are common incidental findings during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations. The etiology of pineal cyst development is still unclear. We aimed to determine whether there is an association between periventricular leukomalacia and pineal cyst prevalence. METHODS Clinical and MRI data of 201 patients with periventricular leukomalacia (110 female, 91 male; mean age, ...
